The Tongue-tie Service

This service is provided through the NHS at Manchester Children's Hospitals. Due to a high demand for the service there is a delay of 4 to 6 weeks for an appointment to see Mr Sheehan on the NHS.

What is tongue-tie?

Tongue-tie is a tight connection from the floor of the mouth to the tip of the tongue. It restricts the range of movement of the tongue in young babies. This can lead to difficulty latching onto the breast during breastfeeding or suckling from a bottle. It may also cause a change to the shape of the tongue.

The procedure to release the tongue tie is called a frenulotomy. In the majority of cases the procedure can be performed in the clinic at your first consultation. It only takes a couple of minutes to perform thereby avoiding a scheduled day admission to hospital for the procedure under general anaesthetic. It is no more painful to your baby than the vaccination jabs they receive. Some babies may sleep through the procedure.

An information brochure can be sent out to you at your request or downloaded here which gives specific information on the consultation and the release procedure. The brochure also gives advice on what to do on the day of your appointment.

An early private appointment can be made to see Mr Sheehan at a convenient time at the new Royal Manchester Children's Hospital (Wenesday afternoon) or North Manchester Hospital Children's Unit (Friday Afternoon).
